CHAPTER SEVEN

Creativity

Success in a portrait studio requires two seemingly opposite tasks: making a great living and being creative, yet remaining in touch with what your clients want. While many photographers have one, few have managed to accomplish both. Many studios never enjoy the financial rewards that are possible, so the owner gets tired of living in poverty and chooses a new profession. On the flip side are the photographers who do achieve a certain level of success financially, only to feel as though they are running a photo mill, herding people in and out just for the sake of making money.

I love photography almost as much as I love all the things that making a good living allows me to do for my family, friends and, of course, myself. For many photographers, making a tremendous amount of money by selling their art feels like selling out.

The first hurdle for most photographers to overcome is to understand just who they are creating their images for. If you’re creating images for yourself, you’ll never be successful in this profession. Many photographers take every image in every session to meet the self-imposed standards without thinking of the person who’s hired them.
